Introduction

The regulations array, which govern healthcare could appear to be overpowering to individuals who work within the industry. Nearly all aspects of healthcare are administered by one regulatory body or the other, and at times by numerous bodies. Professional of healthcare might feel that they squander more time to comply with the regulations, which direct their occupation that actually carrying out the task itself. The healthcare regulation's tangled web emerges from a confrontations set amid contrasting interests, which made the system. Auspiciously, a constant procedure of conciliation maintains the balance (Field, 2008, Pp. 607-608). This paper describes the role of regulation in the healthcare industry. In addition to this the paper assesses the role of information systems management in medical management operations and reporting.

Discussion

A 'regulator', for the purpose of this discussion, is described quite generally for including a broad array of bodies, which influence the behavior, or 'regulate' hospitals with regards to quality. These regulators, in broad categories will comprise of:

Agencies and/or individuals that purchase healthcare, to an extent that their power of purchasing manipulates the hospitals' behavior. This grouping will comprise of individual consumers, managed care entities, large government purchasers, large employers, etc;

The entity or state agency responsible to promote and monitor compliance with the standards and rules promulgated by the government, and

The hospital industry or the hospital itself (Muskie School, 2007, Pp. 1).

A major role is played by regulation within the coverage of health care insurance and the industry of health care. The United States DHHS (Department of Health and Human Services) guards the citizens from numerous risks of health and offers programs for the welfare and health of public by a number of regulatory bodies. Collectively, such agencies of regulation regulate and protect the health of the citizens of the United States of America at all levels i.e. local, state and federal (www.fiercehealthcare.com).

Currently, the challenges within the healthcare management information systems are implementing procedures, regulations and policies intended at normalizing systems. The era of 'one of a king' custom-made systems needs to end, due to the fact that these systems are quite difficult to maintain, far too risky and costly to build and nearly impossible for integrating into bigger systems as the need arises. Crucial concerns, which the healthcare management information systems need to deal with, are payment, enforcement and standards, confidentiality and licensure for the rendered services. By means of the appropriate procedures and policies, a country would obtain immense advantages from healthcare management information systems; the health care system, devoid of substantive, would squirm in a deteriorating economic crisis (Streveler & Sherlock, 2004, Pp. ix).

The role of information systems management, for example the ERP (Enterprise Risk Management) can be utilized for evaluating the accounting system of a health care provider. An ERP is comprised of eight components, which are:

The Internal Environment;

Setting Objectives;

Identifying Events;

Evaluating Risk;

Control Activities;

Information and Communication;

Monitoring, and

Reviewing (Steinberg, Everson, Martens & Nottingham, 2004, Pp. 1-7).
