Introduction

Buffalo State College is committed to the intellectual, personal, and professional growth of its students, faculty and staff. The goal of the college is to inspire a lifelong passion for learning and to empower a diverse population of students to succeed as citizens of a challenging world. Founded in 1871, Buffalo State College is the only State University of New York (SUNY) comprehensive college located in a metropolitan area - and the largest - with more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Buffalo State offers 130 undergraduate and 44 graduate academic programs within five Schools: Arts and Humanities, Education, Natural and Social Sciences, the Professions, and the Graduate School. The 125-acre campus is located in Buffalo's museum district, adjacent to the Olmstead-designed Delaware Park. Buffalo, known as the "city of good neighbors," is New York State's second largest city and the commercial, political, and entertainment hub of an eight-county region of Western New York with nearly 1.6 million people. Located at the easternmost end of Lake Erie, Buffalo borders the Canadian province of Ontario. Toronto is a two-hour drive; New York City can be reached in one hour by air. The Buffalo area has outstanding theater, a world-class symphony, extraordinary architecture, one of the world's top collections of modern art (Albright-Knox Art Gallery), and great restaurants. Western New York also has extremely affordable housing and excellent public school systems. (Gillies, R.M. 2004)

Approximately 1,800 members of the college's diverse student body live on campus; most students commute and are residents of New York State. Buffalo State is an NCAA Division III school and has the city's only collegiate ice hockey rink. Faculty members experience small class sizes and readily available research opportunities. The college has been very successful in obtaining external funding from private and public sources. (Gillies, R.M. 2004)
