Introduction

There are many challenges that affect teachers as the ethnicity and linguistically diverse students cause problems for teachers in the classroom. These challenges include teachers fail to accommodate and appreciate the differences and similarities among the ethnicity and linguistically diverse students. Teachers also face challenges in the building relationships with the ethnicity and linguistically diverse students. Teachers often do not focus on the ways ethnicity and linguistically diverse students learn and observe students to identify their orientations of the task. Of all of these factors, the personal and academic relationships between teachers and their students may be the most influential. This relationship has been referred to as the “core relationship” of learning, the roles of teachers and ethnicity and linguistically diverse students, and their interaction in the classroom.

In relation to new teachers efficiently handle or deal with the needs of bilingual students and second language students, specific behaviors and instructional strategies enable teachers to build a stronger teaching and learning relationship with their culturally ethnicity and linguistically diverse students. Many of these behaviors and strategies exemplify conventional practices of exemplary teaching and others are specific to working with students from ethnicity and linguistically diverse cultures.

Resistance to learning English

Immigrants are reluctant to learn English as they resist learning English. Students do not look and act like they did 20 or 30 years ago, and the differences are not only the result of changes in dress and hairstyles. Modern classrooms; however, reflect the nation's increasing cultural diversity, which based, on ethnicity and linguistically diverse students. Presently, thirty seven percent of school age students are minorities, a figure that will continue to increase in the coming years. Today, schools are showing significant increases in non-White student populations. Moreover, the needs to acculturate newly arrived immigrants are still the important part of the schooling process (Tse, 2001).

Resistance to learning for English that teachers are facing in the classroom for ethnicity, and linguistically diverse students are taking place as faces of immigrant youth are no longer predominantly European faces. They are increasingly the faces of Asians, Hispanics, and others. A large percentage of the Asians are from Southeast Asia, and a large percentage of the Hispanics are from Latin America. Along with ethnic and racial diversity, we will have linguistic diversity. Increasing numbers of children are entering school from the minority language backgrounds and have little or no competence in English. As might be expected, teachers will encounter more students whose ethnic and cultural backgrounds (Armstrong, 1993).

Obstacles to English language learning

The English language is one difficult nut to crack for the immigrants, but if the immigrants can find the right approach, it is one of the easiest languages of the world to follow; ethnicity and linguistically diverse students need to find the grove to have it understand.
