WIND POWER

Is Wind Power Green

Introduction

The movement of rushing air creates wind. When land air that has been heated by the sun rises, it leaves a space to be filled by cooler surrounding air. The filling takes place immediately as space is created in a way that could be described and felt as a rush. This fast movement of air is called wind. Wind power (or energy) can be described as the process by which the mechanical energy in the air movement is employed to produce electricity or do meaningful work. Wind power as an energy source is a green energy source. It is a nondepleting, naturally available, nontoxic, and environmentally friendly source of valuable and usable energy. Wind energy has historically been used directly to power ships, pump water, or grind grain, but the principal application of wind power today is to generate electricity. Large-scale wind farms are typically connected to the local electric power transmission network; smaller turbines are used to provide electricity to isolated locations. There are many alternative sources of energy. Solar energy, hydro electric and wind energy are three of the most common options. Wind energy may be one of the most promising resources to explore (B. Gu, 2000).

Wind power

The wind energy is energy that can be achieved by the movement that produces the wind to interact with the blades of a wind turbine. This energy, which is still under development, was created in response to increased energy demand, the need to ensure continuity of supply in areas net importers of energy resources and the search for sustainability in the use of resources.

In general the best wind areas are located on the coast, due to thermal currents between the sea and earth, the great inland plains, for similar reasons, and mountainous areas, where local acceleration effects (J. Xie, 2001).

What is a Wind Turbine?

A wind turbine is a generator driven by a turbine powered by wind (wind turbine). Its direct precedents are the mills of wind that were used for grinding and getting flour. In this case, wind power, indeed the kinetic energy of moving air, provides mechanical energy to a rotor propeller that, through a mechanical transmission system, the rotor turns a generator, typically an alternator phase, which converts mechanical energy into rotational power .There are different types of wind turbines, depending on its power, the arrangement of its axis of rotation, the type of generator, etc. (David, 2009)

Wind turbines can work in isolation or grouped in wind farms or wind power plants, apart from one another, depending on the environmental impact of the turbulence caused by movement of the blades.

To provide energy to the grid, the turbines should be equipped with a synchronization system for the frequency of the current generated is kept perfectly synchronized with the grid frequency.

Already in the first half of the twentieth century, generating electricity with wind rotors was quite popular in homes located in isolated rural areas.
