Women Rights in 19th and 20th Century

Abstract

The rights of women in the 19th and 20th century are reserved by the society and male dominating governance. Women of that time were not very strong, so the groups of women united for the cause of women rights. The women can't live in the society which had penalties of doing anything against the society. The women leaders of that era, starts the struggle of freedom and equality called the suffrage campaign. Many strugglers of that time faced difficult circumstances to provide the freedom to women. The second wave of feminism is against the brutality on the women, in terms of sex, education, jobs, and inequality.

Introduction

Women are the most precious creation of God, but unfortunately for, getting their rights women suffered a lot in 19th and 20th century. The issue to start the women rights movement was the behavior of the society and people against the women. There were no security provided to women, women can't live a life without her husband, the law and order situation was totally in the favor of man. The cause of the women leaders was to provide justice to women. At Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, forms the women rights movement in by publication of “Declaration of Sentiments”. As the progress of 19th century to promote suffrage, the organizations found like American Women Suffrage Association (AWSA) and National Women Suffrage Association (NWSA).

In the meantime, the country dealing with the Civil War, the role of women in the society began to revolutionize. Many advocates of women rights worked harder for the suffrage of the African Americans. In 1897, Millicent Fawcett, who was the founder of National unions of women suffrage, starts the suffrage movement in the early 20th century. She observes the atmosphere of that time and decided to initiate the movement calmly. The arguments she raise are women should have the right to vote, women should be a part of law making process, and the parliament should answer women for their rights. In the early 20th century, their activities in economic, political and social perspective shifted greatly in American Society from the pre-revolutionary war (Suffrage Movement). American Revolution in the year leading, the women generally was the subordinates to male because of the laws of the organization. They had to marry, become mothers to raise families and perform the activities like wives (Hoffberger, 2007).

The term “feminism” use to define equality for both man and women or the women should have all right as compared to man in the society. The late 1960 to 1970, the generally discussed term “Second wave feminism” refers to essential feminism of women's liberation movement. The first most published event about first harbinger of feminism in the United States, it is the protest of Miss America procession in 1968 to 1969.
