Introduction

The affects that domestic violence has on women internationally and nationally has been a leading issue in the last couple of decades for the World. The issue of domestic violence against women has been addressed in the United States along with every other country and the United Nations. Domestic violence is, “violence by intimate partners which refers to any behavior within an intimate partnership that causes physical, psychological or sexual harm to those in the relationship” (Alsaker p. 959). The violence is slowly being solved all around the World but more and more still needs to be done. The term Femicide is starting to turn heads in the United States as is the increasing awareness of domestic violence against women. The United Nations as well as other organizations has taken steps internationally to help women. Norway has been making domestic violence a major case study and done more research in the last two decades for domestic violence. The Violence Against Women Act as helped the United States in their fight against domestic violence.

Femicide; the New Term:

Femicide is the homicide of women; a killing of one human being by another. Women are abused very day out of the year by their partners. Femicide is a relatively new term used when a partner kills their spouse, a woman. A case study was done and published in the American Journal of Public Health in 2003 in regards to Femicide and who is affected most. “An 11 case-control design was used; femicide victims were cases, and randomly identified abused women residing in the same metropolitan area were control women” (Campbell p. 1089). The study consisted of only English and Spanish speaking women, they used the phone to get a hold of the women and only 82% of the women agreed to participate in the study. The study showed that a multitude of out comes were available. Strongest abuser was one who did not have a job. Also after living together there was a higher risk for femicide in the household. If there was a child that was not the abuser in the environment the rates of abuse doubled. With an arrest in the abuser's past it decreased the risk of abuse to the women in the relationship.
