Introduction

About the poet

Charlotte Smith born on 4 May 1749, in a wealthy London family who owned estates in Surrey and Sussex with their own London town house. Anna Towers Turner (the mother) died three years after Smiths birth, leaving a maternal aunt to grow her. Father, Nicholas Turner, usually travelled abroad and exhausted the family's funds.

She is a good prolific and very popular novelist and poet not only in her own time but also today. Today, Smith remembered for her sentimental and romantic novels and her role for the revival of the sonnet in the late eighteenth century form which influenced such prominent figures of Romanticism as Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. In both poetry and prose, Smith always went beyond the usual concerns of the woman writer to explore the political, social, and intellectual issues of that time.
