Working Memory

Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the working memory by defining the concept, its history and the current research on the concept of working memory. Working memory is used to define the brain system which is used for the storage and manipulation of temporary information. For example, remembering a telephone number while noting it down is the working memory. Each and every human being experiences the working memory thousands of times per day without noticing it. The working memory helps in the storage and manipulation of the information which is involved in different tasks like educating, comprehension, learning and reasoning. Thus, it can be said that working memory is the solution of different complicated tasks.

Introduction

The main purpose of this paper is to define and analyze the concept of “Working memory”. The paper defines the working memory with its current applications and the history.

Definition of the Concept

The term working memory is that brain system which is used for providing the temporary storage and manipulating the information which is used for performing different complicated tasks including the reasoning, comprehension, learning and educating. The working memory is basically an evolution of the unitary short-term memory system. Working memory is helpful for the simultaneous storage and the information processing. The working memory can be classified into three main components i.e. i) the central executive, which is called an attentional-controlling system and is used in different skills like the playing chess, ii) visuospatial sketch pad, this is used for the manipulation of different visual images, iii) the phonological loop, which is used for the storage and rehearsing the speech-based information and is considered to be compulsory element in the acquisition of both the second-language vocabulary and native language vocabulary (Baddeley, 1974).

Working memory is that memory system in the human brain which is used considered to be a part of the human memory system. Working memory is used for combining the temporary storage and is helpful in the proper manipulation of different information which is used in the cognition services. Working memory is the opposite of long-term memory. It is considered to be a distinct part of the memory system with the use of huge storage capacity which is used for holding different data and information in a stable manner (Rose, 2011). As per the multi-component model, an executive controller is included in the working memory which is used for interacting distinct short-term stores which are used for different purposes including the visuo-spatial information and auditory-verbal information. Thus, the component of working memory has come out to be very helpful in different areas of applications including the child development, cognition, neuroimaging and neuropsychology.

The term working memory is normally used for referring the limited capacity in a human brain which is used for the storage and manipulation of memory for a very brief period which is required in different tasks including the learning, reasoning and comprehension of information.
