Introduction

Tesco is a British, multi-national supermarket chain with huge revenues which was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen. It is acting as a public limited company that means it has limited liability. Headquarter of Tesco is in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire and its current CEO is Sir Terry Leahy. (Yeaton? 2008, 68)

In the United Kingdom, stores of Tesco are segmented into five formats, differentiated by size and products sold, that includes Tesco, Tesco Extra, Tesco Metro, Tesco Express and One Stop. Besides providing food, Tesco has diversified into a hypermarket which offers clothes, electronics, phones & broadband services, finance & insurance services and online retailing. During the last decade Tesco has been investing in new markets in order to grow its business, nowadays Tesco has a turnover of £33 billion across almost 2,000 stores. An international expansion is operated intensively to find new ways to enlarge the business and creating returns for shareholders, meanwhile Tesco is represented in 13 countries and employs approximately 400,000 employees. The supply chain consists of a wide range of relationships from the individual farmer and grower as well as manufacturer and distributors; Tesco is doing business with nearly 2,000 own-brand primary suppliers in 98 countries. Giving an opportunity for small companies to sell their products through Tesco, regional buying offices are available to increase the number of local suppliers. Since 2008 Tesco has been a member of the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) which sets standards for suppliers regarding ethical issues, and worker welfare in the supply chain. (Tesco, 2007)

This report has been divided into four parts. In the first part I will evaluate Tesco's corporate responsibility report by using the five stage model. In the second part we will have a deep look into Tesco's products whether they are sustainable or not. Furthermore the third part will deal with how Tesco is responsible for their impacts on its environment. Finally, I will introduce some recommendations on new areas Tesco can break into a new market.

TASK 01: RECRUITMENT, SELECTION AND RETENTION PROCEDURE

Recruitment involves attracting the right standard of applicants to apply for vacancies. Tesco advertises jobs in different ways. The process varies depending on the job available. Tesco first looks at its internal Talent Plan to fill a vacancy. This is a process that lists current employees looking for a move, either at the same level or on promotion. If there are no suitable people in this Talent Plan or developing on the internal management development programme, Options, Tesco advertises the post internally on its intranet for two weeks.
