Insanity and griefcan show up in many different situations, it can be seen in love, hate, desire, lust, greed, grief, or even by just having a lack of food. In Wuthering Heights, one of the main characters shows insanity and griefand grief in many situations. This insane character is Heathcliff, the boy that was adopted by Mr. Earnshaw, after he was found starving on the streets in Liverpool, England. Was Heathcliff insane from the beginning? Mr. Earnshaw showed Heathcliff a great amount of love, and for a short while Heathcliff was happy. Mr. Earnshaw treated Heathcliff as if he was his very own son, Heathcliff was held even higher than Mr. Earnshaw's children at times. Heathcliff had a happy time with the Earnshaw's at their estate Wuthering Heights for 2 years, until Mr. Earnshaw died. Immediately after Mr. Earnshaw died, Heathcliff's life starts to get bad. Heathcliff is made a servant by Henley Earnshaw (the son of Mr. Earnshaw), and is shown hate, which starts to breed the insanity and griefthat is shown later in his life.

However, Heathcliff still has a friend through all his trials. Catherine (the daughter of Mr. Earnshaw) always liked Heathcliff, and for this reason, Catherine will be one of the main reasons for Heathcliffs love, hate, and insanity, throughout the novel.

Why Catherine Marries Edgar and not Health cliff in Emily BrontÃ's Wuthering Heights Only truly fortunate know the love so powerful that it could outlast death it's self. In BrontÃ's Wuthering Heights, it is obvious to all there is the considerable amount of passionate love between Heathcliff and Catherine so there is much confusion over why Catherine marries Edgar and not Heathcliff. However, I think that we can take Catherine at her word and discover that underlying reason she chooses Edgar is her decision to in the real sense, "have it all.' Catherine has all she could want socially with Edgar, his proper courtship, respect he holds, and finally security. However in Healthcliff, Catherine has all she could want romantically, her ideal hero in castle, the soul mate, and the love that she feels would actually outlast death itself. Finding herself in such the dilemma, it is of little wonder readers of this novel have been confused with her decision. (Chitham 45)

Catherine's love is like the person on the raft that comes to the fork in river, one way being rough and full of dangers, other way being smooth sailing all way home. Catherine, being like the average people, wanted to take easy way, that being Edgar's type of romantic. To start with, Edgar offers her proper courtship in order to win her hand, by treating her like the lady in the way any women would love. Edgar shows Catherine next, difference between her home with it at its present state not the happy place to be as Nelly puts it, you will escape from the disorderly, comfortless home" and then there is his home, the wealthy respectable one'where there are parties, ...
