“Youth is something very new: twenty years ago no one mentioned it” conveys the idea that youth, as it is considered today, is not something that was around generations ago. The problem with this statement is that youth was around in some form back then; it is simply not the same back then as it would be today because the temperament of the youth is affected by the attitude and values of the society of its milieu. Youth today is very difference from the past. For one, it lasts longer. Others differences come from the fact that the youth of today is very influenced by the media which is a big part of today's society. This would not be possible for earlier generations and has resulted in a dramatic change in the perception of youth. However although youth today is different, the older generation of people who are commenting on this are not taking into account that in comparison to their parents or grandparents, they also would have had a different sort of youth as society is constantly changing.

The expectations of youth in the past today are very different than a few generations ago. Many of the older generations, believe youth does not have the strong characteristics of past generations. These changes in attitudes over time may be due to the fact that the technology of today's generations means that they do not have as many hardships as in the past. For example, in the past youth did not last nearly as long with childhood not seen as something to preserve. People started work at an earlier age and worked much longer hours. As a result, many older people dismiss today's youth as lazy and surrounded by negative influences, without taking in the positive things about today's culture. Today's youth is ...
