Introduction

There are many ways in which using counselling skills in youth work can be effective in helping individuals with the process of growing up. All youth workers need to use counselling skills to enable effective work with individuals, these skills may be used together with helping models to deliver effective youth work.

I also think it is important to communicate in a language which the individual you are helping understands in the situation above I did not say to her "do you want me to advocate on your behalf" because she would not have been able to relate to this what I said was "do you want me to phone the clinic for you and explain to them how important it is that they see you". It is always important to communicate in a language, which the young person you are working with can understand.

The helping model created by Nelson-Jones is similar to that of Egan and Heron. However, I find this model not as useful in youth work as the other two I have discussed. This is because this helping model is central to "turning restatements, which highlight skills deficits into goals"(Nelson-Jones, 1997) he believes this to be central to the helping process. When helping young people or an individual I find it hard to always refer to this idea. This is because I have found during my youth work experience that interactions with young people are often unplanned and can often be spur of the moment interactions, which may only be possible to last for an unplanned period of time.
