Introduction

The play which has been selected for review is “The Doll House” by Henrik Ibsen. Henrik is known as father of prose drama of the modern world. When Ibsen was of 21 years old he wrote his first play named Catiline. A Doll's House is a depiction of his belief that men and women instead of living together should live freely as their own self and both has the right to enjoy and spend their lives according to their will. Ibsen has been seen focusing on sensitive social issue which either he observed in his life or has been a victim of those events. Ibsen was at that time living in Oslo but due to increasing criticism he has to shift from Oslo to Italy with the support of Norwegian government's stipend. Ibsen has spent most of his time after the shifting at Germany or Italy. A Doll's House is written in the form of prose which later on becomes a highly common genre which is used in modern theatre. In this play Ibsen has focused on the rights of women and the human rights in general. Critics say that this play is a translation of the Norwegian women who posses doll like qualities.

Thesis Statement

At what extent the play “A Doll's House” has depicted the problems which women face in real life. Is the play reality based of it is just an exaggeration and illusion based playwright.

Plot of the Play

The plot of the play revolves around five characters that are associated to each other. In this play Nora and his husband Torvald Helmer are the key characters and the story also begins with Nora entering the room on Christmas Eve. There are different Acts in this play with variety of twist some about revealing about crime and some about revealing about a feeling of love. The play is composed of different genres including romance, suspense, rage and the play end with a tragedy. Nora who is the key character of this play leaves his husband because she think that they are not a proper match for each other despite of the fact that they has been married for almost eight years. In this play there are various moment which reveals different attitude of women and shifts. The main focus which the play revolves around was a secret which was revealed to Nora's husband Helmer at the end of the play. The secret was a crime of forged signature by Nora on the papers of her father to obtain a loan to travel to Italy so that Trovald can gain better health.

Characters

The main characters of this play are Nora, Torvald Helmer, Krogstad, Mrs. Linde & Dr. Rand. The supporting characters of the play include Bob, Emmy, Ivar, Anne-Marie & Nora's Father (He was referred in the play while physically he was absent as he died before the plot of the play initiated).
