CHAPTER 02: LITERATURE REVIEW

The research focuses on children's responses to behaviour management strategies in a Year One class. The research reviews a decent amount of literature to properly identify factors and issues involved in the management of children's responses to behaviour management strategies. The methodology for the research takes into account the knowledge obtained from the review of related academic literature, the nature of the research subject and the aim/objectives which the research wishes to achieve. The research will be carried out using an empirical research using both qualitative and quantitative research. Primary information will be collected via interviews and questionnaires to help shape the findings into an authentic conclusion.

Behavioural projects

Behavioural projects can be very complex especially when it involves children. It is because of this element of the strong hold on technical aspects that make researchers believe that behavioural and reinforcement knowledge can help educators better project managers when it comes to children of year one. Although managing student problem behaviour is one of the greatest challenges facing teachers, sophisticated training in classroom management is often not substantially addressed in the curriculum of teacher training programs, leaving teachers to fend for themselves in dealing with children who disrupt the classroom or fail to apply themselves to academic tasks. Under such circumstances, teachers often resort to "reactive" approaches-techniques that immediately follow the problem response and are geared towards decreasing these responses. The most commonly used of these techniques are reprimands and various forms of timeout (e.g., Van Acker, Grant, & Henry, 1996; Zabel, 1986).

The purpose of this research is to develop the theoretical understanding the impact of children's responses to behaviour management strategies in a Year One class. In this section of the report, the research methodology is outlined specifying the research approach and method that will be used.
