Abstract

In this paper, an attempt has been made to analyze a writer who incorporates his personal life experiences in his literary work. The research analyses the work of Allan Poe, with reference to the topic. Allan Poe is just an example who utilized his excellent literary skills to depict his personal life events in his work. His works such as The Masque of the Red Death, Ligeia, Grains of the golden sand, and A dream within a dream, are depiction of his personality and his experiences.

Introduction

In the literary world, there are many instances where an author has incorporated his personal events of life into his literary work. Ironically, this phenomenon is not at all new; even in classrooms and other literary writing settings, students are commonly made to express their views and what they know in their writings. On the contrary, there are authors who manipulate their character's psychological aspects, without incorporating their personal life events. It's a rarity, than any author would choose any other method for expressing his opinions, mindset through writing. More often than not, we witness a writer who is using his or her writings to vent out his or her grievances, frustrations and joy occurring from personal life events. Edgar Allan Poe, a renowned 19th century writer, is an example of an author who has successfully incorporated his personal life events into his literary work; and it has left a massive impact on his audience (Hutchisson, p. 14).

Born in Boston on 19 January 1809, Poe lost his parents in his childhood; he was then adopted by John and Frances Allan of Richmond in Virginia, where he spent most of the early days of his life. His literary career begun humbly by the anonymous publications of the compilation of his poems called Tamerlane and Other Poems. Poe shifted to Baltimore, where he continued to live with his paternal family. After the demise of her step mother, Poe was expelled from the university only because of the reason of the lack of availability of the funds to pay his fees. It was a dark era in his life he became depressed and started to consume excessive alcohol, and started gambling which was followed by his attempted suicide in the year 1849 (Poe, 15). In the year, Poe married his young cousin, named Virginia. Their marriage lasted for ten years until she got in to the epidemic disease of tuberculosis and died. Poe eventually disappeared after the first week of her demise (Poe, p. 34). It is still quite ambiguous about what happened to him during this tenure. However, there was a speculation that he died because of excessive alcohol use or because of rabies, on 7 October, 1849.
