Introduction

Internet remains the most common and wide spread network that takes the credit of connecting millions of individuals in one part of the world to the other. However, another major service that the internet offers to many of its users is the retrieval of unlimited and infinite information and data. Hence, it is essential that the information provided is not just authentic but also it should be presented in an affective and appealing manner. Therefore, the importance of appealing factors cannot be denied in web designing procedures.

Discussion

The form or pattern of presenting content to the users of internet is basically through a website which can simply be defined as a combination of web pages that includes information in the form of texts, videos, pictures etc.

Web Designing

“Designing a website” can simply be defined as a process or phenomenon in which affective strategies are applied in making web pages of website that has accurate and authentic information. However, some of the other very important aspects that are to be considered while designing a website are to make sure that the site looks appealing and striking.

History and Origin

Aesthetics never had a major role to play in the web designing filed of early times. The web designers on the contrary focused solely on authenticity of the information or data provided and on “Functionality” of the web page.

Functionality

The two major areas catered by Functionality included interfaces and Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Hence, the major focus remained on presenting a website with complied data and zero delay in downloading of information or the site itself. Jacob Neilsen and Rolf Molich, the two experts in user friendly web designing declared memorability, learnability, understandability, errors, efficiency and satisfaction as the major components that defines the Functionality of a web design (Thorlacius, 2007).

Therefore, communication through visuals and graphics on the website was an uncommon practice until the mid 90's when web designers divided themselves in to two groups. The first group supported the idea of focusing of Functionality only. However, designers in other group, like David Seigel, encouraged the frequent use of graphics in the web designing procedures (Thorlacius, 2007).

Then were introduced various flash elements in order to stuff the websites with various graphics and colors. However, with the passage of time web designers realized that these Flash elements were affecting the downloading speed of the web pages and websites. Moreover, majority of internet users with minimal graphic background would not even relate to the various flash elements used. Hence, the introduction of delays in downloading and processing, wastage of money and most importantly frustration of the internet users because of these new trends forced the web designers to rethink their strategies regarding providing aesthetics to websites with the help of flash elements (Thorlacius, 2007).
