Abstract

In this study we try to explore the concept of “African American Grief and Losses” in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on “how the African Americans have experiences losses” and its relation with “grievances associated in the name of religion and theology experienced by African Americans”. The research also analyzes many aspects of “how religion has been concerned with the kind of problem and situations associated within the African American context” and tries to gauge its effect on “subtopic”. Finally the research describes various factors which are responsible for “topic” and tries to describe the overall effect of “Topic” on “Subtopic”.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Life and death are amongst the most common events that individuals experience in their surroundings. These two symbolizes that help people realize the kind of life events that individual experience every day. For some, it is a norm and an accepted fact of life; for others, it comes as uninvited guest, especially for those who either haven't experienced it or haven't witnessed it around them.

Religion, no matter Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism or any other, all teach the concept and help its followers understand the cycle of life and the journey of death and beyond. For some it may be the norm of life and their reason of existence, who have spent their by the rules and codes of conduct established and put forth in the religion they belong to.

On the other hand, for those who are unaware of the realities or intentionally become indifferent to these truths, they tend to adopt a more rigid, disdainful, relentless personality, leading to adoption of extremism, living on their own rules and defined principles and finally pertaining to follow a school of thought called 'atheism'.

To understand the kind of problems and casualties currently and previously experienced by people belonging to the African American culture, it becomes much disturbing and alarming to witness many people not following religious teaching or even paying attention to the kind of immense, irrevocable losses each of them has experienced.

While religion has played a significant, pivotal role in the development of the African Americans, there are ample problems and casualties being experienced in their culture today.
