Music and Religious Life

This paper intends to discuss the significance of music and religious life. For most of the religions, music has been witnessed as an impactful aspect which facilitates the performance of religious activities. However, various religions like Islam do not promote the use of music at core. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of music and religion and the basic connection between the two.

It is important to realize that music provides an uplifting impact for the purpose of designing religious activities. Music provides the listeners an opportunity to connect with the Ultimate and Supreme Power of God. However, religions like Islam do not promote the amalgamation of music into the religious activities. The concepts of Islam suggests that music is such a man made creation which makes people get away from God, and music do not contribute in creating a connection between the God and people. Our society reflects the belief that it is fundamental that music and religion are connected through some way or the other. Religious life is greatly impacted by the aspect of music in Western Society (Thomas, Andreas & Keith, 2011).

However, there is an established fact that not all the religions promote the utilization of music for the purpose of worshipping or improving their religious lives. Some of the religions use music to praise and worship their Gods. Such religions make it compulsory for its believers to live a religious life that reflects the prominence of music in their worshipping. On the other hand, there are several religions like Islam which considers that music becomes the sole reason of making people diverge from their religion. Moreover, various religions also suggest that music diverts the attention of the people and make the religious life of the believers sinful by using the evil tool of music (Guy, 2006).

The identification of societies or religions which embraces music into the religious lives of its believers is also important like I have identified Islam as being completely against the utilization of music as an integral part of religion. The society of Malagasy or Madagascar relates all the negative happenings to the negative spirits. People of Malagasy society often held ceremonies for the purpose of communicating with the negative spirits. This communication is done through the utilization of music as a basic tool. This aspect clearly depicts that the significance of music is immense from various religions. People use music to escape from negative spirits (Thomas, Andreas & Keith, 2011).

It is interesting to note that religions like Christianity also promote the use of music the religious ceremonies. The religious ceremonies are inaugurated by music and the music is so peaceful that it helps the followers or believers to just concentrate on their religious ceremonies more positively. Lastly, it can be rightfully said that the religious life and music possess a significant relationship which is important to create a unique bond between the God and the ...

Has the internet changed the way people perform music? An in-depth look at how open source software has influenced music performance.

Internet has changed the way humans learn, communicate, think and even method of consumption. The question that arises is that are the musicians nowadays creating sounds with the help of technology which could not have been possibly produced otherwise. Many different theories exist on how music overall has been impacted by the advent of technology and especially the invention internet along with the introduction of computer recording software like Pure Data, an open source software which allows all users easy access to professional recording and mixing. The fact that the music industry has irrevocably changed cannot be disputed, and the way music is composed has been re invented due to internet and emerging technology (Tanaka, 2005, pp. 191-198). The ‘streaming culture’ which allows for music enthusiasts and other internet surfers or fans to switch to a more attention catching beat with a single click of the mouse has certainly been affected. Ever since the ‘age of machines’ began, even before the advent of internet as a global base for users, in the 1950s, commonly referred to as the time when Stockhausen clashed with Pierre Schaeffer and his “musique concerte” in the Cologne, the Moogs and thermins technology with the help of 808s and auto tune had seeped into the way music was produced and had moulded it in a way which had become unrecognisable. However, it cannot be argued that internet has certainly managed to accelerate the culture of music online and glorified it, in process expanding the boundaries of the music industry to new heights. Nevertheless, it cannot be argued that ...
