Asian Americans

For me, interacting with the people who belong to the ethnic group of Asian Americans was a very memorable and learning experience. This is because Asian Americans comprise of the highest-income, fastest-growing and the best-educated racial group in whole of the United States. They are generally more satisfied than the rest of the public with their finances, lives and the country's direction, and live a healthy lifestyle. Apart from that, they also place more value on parenthood, marriage, career success and hard work compared to other Americans. The reason I chose this ethnicity group for my project is because Asian Americans have come a long way from what they were initially thought to be like.

Even a century ago, most of the Asian Americans were thought to be low-skilled and it was deemed that they are workers kept on low wages that are crowded into enclaves of their ethnicity and are also one of the main targets of discrimination on the basis of race and ethnicity. However, after the interview sessions I conducted, I realized that these views have changed to a great extent and I learned that Asian Americans are now one of the main groups in America belonging to a different race and ethnic background, who have settled to live in neighborhoods that are mixed and are also open to marrying across the racial lines. A high percentage of the Asian American brides marry a non-Asian groom.

I realized that there are many things that people can learn from the Asian Americans. They have achieved milestones when it comes to economic success and that has contributed to social assimilation which has come to them while they still remain the majority immigrants. Through my interviews, I found out that most of the Asian American population was born abroad and half of them said that they can speak English very well whereas the rest of the half said they are not very fluent in the language.

I believe that diversity is a very important issue and it should be considered when studying behaviors of different ethnic groups and the impact that other countries have on the people of those groups when they migrate. It is pertinent to note that the wave of modern immigration which came from Asia is now around half a century old. This wave has caused the total population of the Asian Americans to reach record high numbers, which means that they now represent a majority group when it comes to ethnic diversity and thus have been able to have a better say in economics and politics due to their increased contribution in these fields.

In order to study how the individuals belonging to ethnic minorities identify with different groups, cultures and populations, it is crucial to consider that recently, Asians have passed the Hispanics as the biggest group of immigrants who are new to the United States.
