1-Have a conversation with a friend of the same gender about the 4 courtship rituals. Ask your friend for specific nonverbal behavior examples of each of the 4 rituals that he/she has personally used related to dating and courtship.

Same Gender Friend First Name: Jason

1- Courtship Readiness: Jason said he shaved and brushed his teeth particularly before going on date, he also said he used a particular brand of perfume which he has saved for such occasions also when he saw his date, he said he automatically stood up straighter and pulled his stomach in.

2- Preening Behavior: According to Jason, when he was looking for his date, he automatically ran a hand through his hair and when he approached her, he adjusted his suit.

3-Positional Cues: When he sat down, Jason said he positioned both his hands on either side of him, wrists resting on the table, in a friendly and 'open' position. He said before he got to his date, she was sitting with both arms and legs crossed slightly turned to a direction starring listlessly at the table which gave an indication that she does not wish to be bothered. Once he got to her she uncrossed her arms and legs and sat with her arms in her lap, which showed that she was open to conversation then.

4- Actions of Appeal: He said as the date progressed in a positive manner, he could see her often rolling her eyes at him or curling her lips again and again in a mocking smile. He understood it to be signal of his positive influence on her.

Opposite Gender Friend First Name: Zoe

1- Courtship Readiness: Before going out on a date Zoe said she took a long hot bath, after which she put on cosmetics that would cover some freckles and wrinkles on her face

2- Preening Behavior: When Zoe saw her date approach she said she automatically adjusted her dress and brushed her hair away from her face and behind her ears.

3-Positional Cues: She said that when her date walked in she saw he had a frown on his face and his hands were in his pockets as he scanned the crowd for her. She said it felt that the man was busy in his agenda and does not wish anybody to intrude on his business. When he saw her, she said his frown turned into a smile and his hands came out his pockets to his side in an easy manner. In regards to herself, she said even I was sitting to a side since I was nervous and waiting for him, I had automatically crossed my legs and pulled out my mobile phone and was looking at it intently, breaking off to look around for ...
