The Nature of the Relationship between Attachment Style and Relationship Quality

Abstract

The study examines the nature of the relationship between attachment style and relationship quality which indicates the Secure attachment rating and Dismissive attachment rating have no relationship with the Fearful attachment rating and Total score on Trust respectively. Moreover, friendship has higher fearful attachment and dismissive attachment is found in comparison to romantic relationship. However, the study found relationship of preoccupied attachment with the relationship or friendship satisfaction.

Introduction

The study is based on finding the relationship between attachment style and relationship quality in the context of romantic partner and friend. The attachment styles which are included are the Secure, Preoccupied and Dismissive attachment; besides it, the factors for the relationship are trust, satisfaction and commitment. All of these factors are imperative and essential to incorporate as attachment style and relationship quality depends on these factors.

Research Question

What is the relationship between attachment style and relationship quality?

Hypotheses

HO1: There will be a positive relationship between endorsement of a secure attachment style and trust.

HO2: There will be a negative relationship between endorsement of a dismissive attachment style and relationship commitment.

HO3: There will be a negative relationship between endorsement of a preoccupied attachment style and relationship satisfaction.

HO4: There will be a positive relationship between endorsement of a fearful attachment style and level of depression.

HO5a: Participants making ratings on the basis of a friendship will have lower dismissive attachment ratings than participants making ratings on the basis of a romantic relationship.

HO5a: Participants making ratings on the basis of a friendship will have lower fearful attachment ratings than participants making ratings on the basis of a romantic relationship.

Method

Data Sources and Research Limitations

The concept of methodology for research study is an important and imperative for the whole research study as it reflects the basis for the entire study that is related to the nature of the relationship between attachment style and relationship quality (Bryant, 2007). Designing the appropriate research methodology is complicated, but it is necessary and fundamental because it determines the degree the significance and also the validity of the results of research (Cooper & Schindler, 2006). As any omission and mistakes can direct to the wrong direction and as a consequence adopting the incorrect statistical tools and techniques which can affect the results of the analysis of attachment style and relationship quality (Edwards, 2009).

Data Collection

The data is collected from 40 participants who are selected on random basis as random sampling is used.

Statistical Technique

For the data analysis, the statistical test that is applied is the chi-square test as all the variables are categorical (Kumar, 2007). Therefore, to find the relationship chi-square analysis is used.
