Applying Augmented Reality to Modern Day Architectural Designs

Introduction

The topic under study related to augmented reality in modern day architectural designs. The use of augmented reality in architecture helps architects to present their objects to customers in a better way and at the same time, it enables them to market their designs as well. This paper provides literature review focusing on these realities.

Although, our complete focus in this paper is on augmented reality in context to architecture, but at the same time, it is important to provide a brief definition of Augmented Reality. Augmented reality is defined as portraying objects whose elements are augmented to make its visibility more live. The concept of augmented reality has been generated by the concept of mediated reality where the designs of the objects are modified usually using computer generated inputs. In future, it is believed that for people, augmented reality in architectural designs will be a great way to visit with your family and friends, or attend a business meeting (Wagner & Schmalstieg, 2003, p. 127). Already we use telephones, video-conferencing and other forms of communication to do some of this. But, imagine what will happen when buildings get more virtual reality capabilities. It might be possible to share a taste, a scent or even a virtual handshake or hug.

Applying augmented reality to modern day architectural designs has been considerably increased in this era. One of the reasons for doing this is to generate better connectivity between people and architectural designs. In other words, augmented reality is widely used by architects to present their designs to customers in a better way along with the marketing of the designs (Novitski, 1996).

Literature Review

Literature review intends to provide broader perspectives for applying augmented reality to modern day architectural designs and its use by the architects for presenting the designs in a better way along with its relation to marketing.

A very interesting definition of augmented reality presented by Ronald Azuma, which explores the concept of using augmented reality in architectural designs. According to Azuma (1997), in actual, augmented reality is augmenting the real world by using the realities from virtual world. This is basically done to integrate the real world with the virtual elements. Augmented reality in designs acts as a linkage between people, information, communities and destinations by giving them a real-time look. This is a way of marketing in a sense that people not only experience the designs aesthetically, but experiencing their functionality as well.

A small study conducted on augmented reality suggests that buildings are going to have a major impact due to augmented reality. The way of doing things will get better by this innovative tool and at the same time getting things done will be enjoyed by people (Behringer & Sundareswaran, 2002). Although, the concept of doing things in a better way relates to virtual realities, but even virtually people will be able to experience certain things which otherwise would have more time ...
