BedZED

Objectives

BedZED is a zero-energy residential area opened in London in 2000. With occupancy of 3000 m2, it one of the project of this nature made in the UK. Powered by the architect Bill Dunster and driven by various promoters. BedZED (Beddington Zed Energy Development) is a set of 92 homes of various types with business and community services. Their approach is to form a green environment and has high energy efficiency. Converting a former waste treatment plant in an attractive example of sustainable housing and affordable.

Among the main objectives of Bed Zed are zero consumption of fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil), the use of passive solar strategies, intelligent use of the weather, use of recycled materials, responsible use of water and a proposal for a general new way of life. Passive solar strategies employed include cross ventilation systems and ventilation chimneys, roof plant, natural lighting, thermal insulation adequate reduction of windows facing north favoring the South and use of double and triple glazing as needed. These solutions reduce heating energy needs and cooling to near zero (Lazarus 2003, 106).

Up till now several objectives have been achieved in resects of this project like Here, 90% of the materials come from within 50 km radius (certified wood) and are commonly recycled (old rails railway). The design of housing thought of in terms of energy efficiency and quality of life: reinforced insulation, sunshine, terraces and garden, ventilation system with heat recovery. The use of renewable energy and optimizing resource BedZED project is a great example of that scale may be a fair use resource. Collection of rainwater for toilets, electrical and thermal energy provided by biomass (waste wood), the recovered heat and photovoltaic panels located on the facades. This electricity can even charge 100% electric vehicles available to share with people.
