Behavioral Support Plans for Children

Abstract

A Behavior Support Plan is a plan that is often used to control and handle changes in the behavior of a child without worsening the situation. It is designed to address the changes in the behavior of a child that is actually affecting his behavior at school with teachers and friends and his learning capabilities. Thus the objective of this plan is to understand the reason the behavior of a child has changed which means identifying what has caused that behavior change and then focusing on a reaction that could cope up with this change in a positive manner. To control behavioral changes, the teacher can employ tactics such as rewarding good behavior of a child. This would not only make him happy but would also encourage others in class to do well to achieve that success and avoid any kind of misbehavior. The teachers can use the strategy of talking to the children, this way he would feel that he is being understood and the teacher cares about him and then he would learn to express himself more appropriately rather than engaging in different negative behavior so that he can be noticed. Finally, the best cure is patience along with the above mentioned strategies; the teacher can use patience because the child's behavior cannot change overtime so while applying these strategies the teacher should have patience because it would take time for the child to behave in the positive manner again.

Introduction

It has been noticed that a child's behavior changes like a weather. He might be happily playing with his friends and siblings one moment and suddenly might get frustrated and might start misbehaving the other minute. This could be a result of emotional stress or low self esteem that the child is going through which becomes difficult for parents and teachers to handle and control. It has been seen often that when a child's behavior changes, parents and teachers get frustrated. They cannot find ways to control these changes so they impose strict punishment on their children which results in worsening the situation more. These sorts of punishments include taking away all the luxurious items that they love playing with such video games, toys and cell phones. This can also include grounding children which means not letting them hang out with friends and forcing them to stay at home. Teachers normally give punishments such as making them stay at school for a longer period which means detaining them, not giving breaks in between the class and embarrassing them in front of the whole class (Boyajian, 2001).

Changing child behavior can occur in many instances including when the family decides to shift their house or move the child to a different kindergarten, it might cause the child to act differently since he would find difficulty in adjusting to the fact that he is going to a different environment and would have to make ...
