Blog 1: Making of an Auteur

Since 1982 with the launch of E.T., Steven Spielberg has shown outstanding thematic unity in his work. In spite of their populism, he has incorporating several issues which are close to his heart. Steven Spielberg explored his childhood dreams in the movie Close Encounters, E.T., Poltergeist (1982) and Empire of the Sun (1987). Furthermore, the movie Always (1989) reflecting his view on managing work and personal commitments. On the other hand, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) and Hook (1991) showed his issues on fatherhood. Schindler's List (1993) examined in detail his cultural background. In other words, most of Spielberg's work has been following an auteurist approach (Bordwell & Thompson 1993, Pp. 125).

Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest figures of cinema. He is the director of talents, who knows how to combine commercial and critical success. He became one of the most influential figures in the history of cinema. Spielberg was born on December 18, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Steven Allan Spielberg fell into the cinema when he was little. It started with the 8 mm camera from his father, with which he turned at the age of 13. He has written his scripts, drawn storyboards, composed music, built models and tried his hand at animation. Amblin, his first film (short film) in 35 mm, he realized in 1969, was awarded in several festivals and attracted the attention of Universal Studios, with which he signed a seven-year contract. He realized many TV movies, including an episode of Colombo in 1970 and, especially, Duel, in 1971, triggering his career. Originally designed for the TV, its success is as it comes to film and won the Grand Prix Festival of Avoriaz. He says so in 1974 the realization of Sugarland Express, his first film made for cinema, which is a commercial failure (Morris 2007, Pp. 109).

However, it makes up for the following year with “The Jaws”, a huge international success, the first blockbuster of the genre. His second film finally sits down his reputation: it is the third such meeting in 1977, which remains almost thirty years later, a cult film. In 1982, he set a record with revenue and the alien, which will be exceeded only eleven years later, by itself, with Jurassic Park.
