As Nurse Manager on a Telemetry Medical Surgical Unit it is my responsibility to make sure my staff is full educated in the equipment and patients that they take care of. My staff consists of twenty-five Registered Nurses (RN); twenty Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) and twenty-five Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP). In the prior years, my budget has not called for enough money to be able to consistently educate my staff appropriately. In reading the following it will be clear on why my budget needs increased for education purposes and why it is so vital for the staff to be properly educated. My organization recognizes the importance and value of the development and training of staff, and the development of academic practice in enabling the hospital, units to fulfill its mission and achieve strategic objectives. As a manager, I must provide a framework for identifying, and addressing the development needs of the staff to facilitate the process of change. All staff has a responsibility to develop their skills and knowledge in order to enhance their performance in their current role and prepare them for future roles. Staff should also recognize the importance of the contribution they can make to the development of their peers (Fall et al, 1997).

Staffing scheduling is an art to determine the needs of the department on a daily basis. It is based on acuity, assets (resources), census, patient care hours and case mix. The following things must be considered when creating a staff budget: nursing care hours per patient day, nonproductive times, and training times, history of overtime, average wage rate, and percentage of staff mix.
