Introduction

Hand Hygiene plays a vital role in nursing and healthcare. Effective hand hygiene can lower the prevalence of health care associated infections among patients in hospitals and clinical settings. In health care poor hand hygiene standards has made it challenging to overcome the prevalence of infections that could increase the rate of health risks among patients. The compliance of hand hygiene in hospitals is said to be low. Several barriers to hand hygiene compliance have been identified that has increased the widespread of infection from patient to patient and health care workers.

To monitor the compliance of hand hygiene it has become significantly important to routinely commence standardized hand hygiene inspection in clinical and health care settings with results that are produced by ward and staff type. It is encouraged that head nurses monitor the staff nurses and other health care providers with respect to hand hygiene as defined under national guidelines of hand hygiene.

An Overview of Case Study

Hand hygiene is an important as it restricts the prevalence of health care associated infections. To sustain hand hygiene compliance in hospitals it is important that timely inspection and performance feedback of health care workers is monitored (Creedon, 2005, p. 1). The case study deals with the monitoring of hand hygiene in hospital through careful inspection of health workers with respect to following appropriate procedure of hand hygiene.

Marina the head nurse is involved in inspecting new staff nurses with respect to hand hygiene being followed correctly and appropriately. She has been observing a new nurse Stephanie carefully. Stephanie when not monitored by Marina would follow the correct guidelines of hand hygiene and would wash her hands carefully. Though, she would not use alcohol gel to wash her hands. Marina arranged a session under which she was carefully guided at every step of hand hygiene its importance and necessity to be performed.

Reliability Of Stephanie Washing Her Hands According To The National Guidelines

The clinical staff must wash their hands according to the prescribed guidelines of hand hygiene. Compliance with evidence based guidelines for hand hygiene is low in different health care settings.
