Stages of Group Development

The various stages for group development helps the organizations to be better able to formulate groups in which there will be lesser conflicts and all the team members will move towards achieving the common goals. These stages are as:

Forming

In this first stage, personal relations in the group are characterized by dependency. The members emphasize on patterned and safe behavior along with seeking the direction and guidance from the group leader. The main task is orientation at this stage and the discussion should be focused on the task's scope, the way it will be approached (Tuckman, 1965).

The group in the case has not been able to successfully move from the first stage to the second stage of group development due to which they are facing problems in terms of relationships and conflicting goals of team members.

Storming

This stage consists of conflict and competition in the dimension of personal relations. In this stage, the members make efforts of organizing the task due to which conflicts arise. It is important for each team member to mold and bend the beliefs, attitudes, ideas and feelings so that they can suit the group. The issues in terms of the responsibility, rules, reward system, evaluation criteria are all raised. The focus of this stage should be to move from the mentality of testing and proving to the mentality of solving the problem which should be done through the ability to listen (Tuckman, 1965).
