ABSTRACT

Public Private Partnerships are increasingly being adopted in the United States, mainly in Wales and England through the Private Finance Initiatives (PFIs). This has developed as the most important concept in the United Kingdom's service and public facilities provision where its importance cannot be underestimated. Although the implementation of PFIs in waste management is not free of hurdles, issues and challenges, some successful projects have been implemented that guarantee a sound position of such measures in making the country, eco-friendly and sustainable. The paper provided some examples of successfully managed and executed PFIs in order to lay down its importance while also debating over its probable contributions in the high-profile waste management industry. The questionnaire based online survey was undertaken mainly with the objective to find the ten main critical success factors that can be associated with the PFIs feasibility in the waste management industry. The results of the survey show that for a successful waste management Private Finance Initiative, the critical success factors are good governance economic stability, stable consortium and sense of responsibility between the public and private sectors. Moreover, the case study provided some examples of successful PFIs in order to reflect upon its applicability and usefulness in the U.K business sector, while it attempts to reduce “waste” and recycle it. Some recommendations at the end of the paper show how the policy makers could benefit from the opportunities lying ahead, while minimizing the country's vulnerability from the challenges they face. These findings are useful for policy makers as they go about formulating regulations for Private Public Partnerships especially in case of Waste management Private Finance Initiatives (PFIs). In future, it can be expected that Wales and England would witness more successful projects in PFIs while the country on the collective side, contributes towards the sustainability of Mother Earth.
