Classroom Observation

Introduction

At present, a number of challenges are a part by the educational system, whether it is school, college or higher level education

Purpose of the observation

To understand the challenges and a number of aspects related to an educational institute, I made a plan to visit a school to assess the present educational environment,. One of my friends has some link with the school administration, and his help gave me a chance to monitor the activities of the class. I was not revealed as an observer to the school's faculty. Only the principal knew about the purpose of my observation. The faculty members were just told that I am here for a trial period, and if the administration finds me perfect for their institute, I will be taken as a part of the school. I have opted for the observation of class V as, this is the last year of the first section, and the way student behave at the secondary level can better be assessed by their behaviour at this level.

Teacher and students' interaction

Two side communications is always a valuable aspect of formal learning. But, unfortunately, such learning tactics are not supported in our society. The students most are of the times not given an opportunity to speak in the class, and this is the reason they lack in their level of confidence.

. My visit was divided into a 5 days week plan in which I use to spend 4 hours daily in the classroom. I have observed that some of the teachers were so cooperative and friendly that they try to ask the student after teaching each topic to summarize the context. Thus, by this activity two purposes were fulfilled, first a teacher gets feedback that whether students understand the concept, and secondly the learning to work in groups is promoted. Contents, material and the activities remain a focus of most of the teachers in school. (Roberts & Pruitt, 2003).

On the other side, few teachers had an attitude of just coming in the class, ask the students to open their books, and just read out the content. They do not promote the culture of asking questions in class and thus serve as a demotivation for students

Duration of each observation

As I want to spend at least 20 hours in a school learning environment, I have divided my visit into 5 days. Below is the chart showing the duration of the each day observation.
