Clinical Placement

Introduction

This paper intends to focus on the clinical placement of my own experience while I was engaged in providing nursing care to patients and their families in relation to care, compassion and communication, infection prevention and control. Different nursing settings can lead to certain complications. One patient in ambulatory surgical facilities can present different situations that a person in a health clinic. The defence of a patient in an addiction treatment centre can be very different than that of a nursing home for patients requiring monitoring of their medication. During my placement I faced various situations which include selection of proper medication, then selection of adequate method of providing care to the patient. It helped me to learn about the behaviour of patients and their family. If we talk about the family of the patient then I would say that aligning the family with the situation of patient is very important. As his family is not mentally prepared for any problem and in case if there arises a situation in which the family has to face problem they create panic. This panic at times creates problem for the medical staff especially the nurses. Here it is very important to understand the feeling and emotions of the family along with taking care of the patient. If proper medication channel is not selected by the nurses and the patient is not treated on continuous basis then this negligence can create problem for the whole medical staff. I learned how to avoid such satiation and I also learned some management skills which includes time management and importance of persistence.

Discussion

Side rooms are small rooms where patients are closely placed. As the room gets crowded, it is evident from the behaviour of patients that they get nervous. Even nurses avoid going into such rooms because if they visit one patient, the others will most probably seek attention even if was not required. That day, the side room was almost empty with just two patients placed there. In this case, they did not feel isolated because other nurses and I often visited them and inquired about their health. The communication was quite good as there was always a nurse around. I also had to cooperate with the physicians for the interpretation of results of the screening such as stool test and test for allergy (Rungadapiachy, 1999, p. 9). When I found out about the reason for their illness I was surprised to know that they were not consuming a proper diet, food was not properly cooked, vegetables were not washed before using and same was the case with fruits. They were not taking proper sleep and boiled water was not used (Branon & Feist, 2003 p18).

Being a nurse, I had to regularly visit the side room to check whether ...
