Abstract

This research report is intended to determine the most widely used therapeutic approach to address the psychological patients which is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The cognitive behavioral therapy is primarily an assimilation of behavioral as well as cognitive therapy that includes numerous therapeutic programs such as exposure therapy, relaxation training and cognitive processing therapy that are mutually used in CBT to provide a complete assistance to the clients. This technique is used to change the maladaptive thinking of patients that leads to significant change in their behavior, emotions and attitude. This therapeutic approach deals with the maladaptive behavior and dysfunctional emotions through copious goal oriented and systematic procedures based on cognitive processes.

The CBT can successfully be employed to deal with the numerous major as well as minor psychiatric illnesses either in adults or adolescents. The cognitive behavior therapy is conducted by the psychotherapist in a structured way where the patients are required to attend the number of sessions. There are myriad techniques that are used in cognitive behavioral approach to assist patients to transform their inaccurate thoughts and behavioral patterns that include, Cognitive Rehearsal, Behavioral Homework Assignments, Modeling, Systematic Desensitization, Keeping Journal, Conditioning, and Validity Testing.

The study also indicates that CBT pays a great heed to cultural influences and minority cultures including age, race, religion, gender, socioeconomic status, income levels, sexual orientation and disability. Hence, the cognitive behavioral therapy integrates the cultural concerns and influences to deal with the diverse clients.

This research paper intends to expound the most effective psychotherapeutic approach that is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This therapeutic approach deals with the maladaptive behavior and dysfunctional emotions through copious goal oriented and systematic procedures based on cognitive processes. The rationale behind undertaking this research is that cognitive behavioral therapy is problem focused and action oriented technique where therapists attempts to address the clients through selective and specific strategies to assist them with their specified problems (Schacter et al., 2010). Besides that, this technique is evidence based treatment which is known for its efficacy and specified treatments for symptom based diagnoses. This approach is highly favored over the other psychological treatments such as psychodynamic treatments (Lambert, 2013).

This study would extenuate the cognitive behavioral therapy in a detailed account and how it is useful in addressing the needs of people through various programs and sessions to help patients recover with the steady speed. The brief description of steps included in the CBT from identifying the reasons underlying the problem to the controlling of that particular concern through the sessions. The most important fact is that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is efficient to treat the diverse populations through cultural responsiveness where therapists can easily develop strategies within the context of patient's culture.
