Background

In order to fulfil the interpersonal needs, undergraduate students are found to overuse the communication technology due to the fact that Twitter, MySpace, Facebook and other social networking sites' influx have become a ubiquitous aspect of student life. There might be a misconception that the students are being too social or perhaps wasting their time if this situation is observed from a distance. Generally, face-to-face communication help in identifying the nonverbal communication, active listening, conflict management and other interpersonal skills as frowning, smiling, or nodding might are apparent immediately in the feedback provided face-to-face. However, anonymous messaging, multitasking, and other activities that is possible in online interactions while these less obvious skills through online interactions are beyond face-to-face interactions. The increased prevalence of communication technology is now changing the skills of traditional communication.

Communication technology is utilized when two or more people interact with each through networked systems, either computers or mobile phones, and share or exchange the interactions. Connections with friends and family and sharing common activities and interest are possible online communities that the individuals build using social networking sites. Through instant messenger and status updates many people can be communicated at one time and this is the reason behind substantial attraction to these social sites. Befriending with other users, creating a profile, and upload pictures are among many features that the social sites like Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook provide to their users. These facilities that are available to the users also include commenting on the pages of other users and controlling privacy through controlling information about them. The mediation of internal personal life of students can be better understood if researchers and teachers understand the student's attraction towards these sites as their use is exponentially increasing.

Positive as well as negative impacts of the interaction between students through communication technology are observed. The use of information technology is found to bring the organised humiliation to terrorism, fraudulent activity, and a variety of corrupt behaviour. For example, email communication helped in planning the attack of 9/11. Moreover, bullying, identity theft, sexual predators approaching internet users sometimes even children are included in the possible threats resulting from evasive communication through communication technology. Despite of these negative perspectives, the positive perspective of using communication technology includes enhancement of interest through joining the related groups, being enable to stay connected with friends and family, or might find a future employer through joining different groups that provide employment opportunities. Further research is needed on the communication technology as this te4chnology is evolving through adapting to the needs of users that includes a large number of youth and students; one example is the exponentially increased popularity of social networking sites.

Fear and a loss of control over information shared were among the initial constraints in the provision of communication technology since 1980s. Originally, invasion of privacy and Internet abuse by government was rooted ...
