Introduction

Good communication skills are essential and important to medical and health care practice. Communication skills are not only important between doctors and patient but it also effects the interaction between the health care team. Patient satisfaction and productivity is increased with effective communication. With the help of effective communication doctors are able to understand the patient disease and are able to cure them more easily. However there are many hurdles to effective communication on doctors and patients which are created due to organizational structures in which they work.

According to my experience, doctors need to communicate orally with their patients, professionals and their health care team. I believe doctors and nurses should strive hard to achieve good communication skills by analysing their own abilities. I think that education specialist should provide adequate training to doctors and nurses so that they can easily interact with their patients.

Discussion

I recently got an opportunity to travel with my health care team to a remote area where people didn't have access to good hospitals and doctors. Most of the people present there were affected by stroke. As a nurse I face a lot of difficulties and problems while communicating with the patients. However, during my experience I developed communication skills that helped me a lot in dealing with patients and will benefit me in future.

As a nurse I experienced that if doctors and nurses establish effective communication with their patients, it can help in healing their disease. Through communication whether verbal and non verbal, patients can express their emotion. This communication gap if filled can help maintain strong and healthy relationship with the patient. Some of the basic skills that developed in me as a nurse are discussed below.
