Introduction

Communication can be referred to as an exchange of a person's feelings, ideas and information; this can be in any form such as verbal, written, signs or even body language. For any organization to function efficiently, communication is very important. It not only develops a rapport between employees but also a level of trust is established. This helps the employees to have a unified goal and helps them work together in order to achieve those goals. Poor level of communication can lead to a number of issues in the workplace; this may include low level of motivation, decrease in productivity, high rate of errors, conflicts (Guo & Sanchez, 2005).

Thesis

When information is exchanged within an organization it is called workplace communication. It is the sharing of information between people to reach a common ground of understanding. This is also referred to the Interpersonal communication. This type of communication is divided into three category, firstly; public speaking, secondly small group communication and third dyadic communication. For an employee to have a successful career, he/she must have effective interpersonal communication skills at workplace. This kind of communication, not only transfers and shares information but also a relationship is developed between the sender and the receiver. This is done mainly by listening carefully to others and understanding what they are trying to convey. How we communicate to others is also an important factor, the body language that is used, the pitch of voice that is used in communicating plays a vital role. Making the receiver listens to what you are trying to communicate and making sure they are understanding you point is also very important for effective communication to take place (Schramm, 1954).
