Communication

Communication is a means of dissemination of information through behavior, writing, signals, visuals, or speech. The process of communication requires a sender, receiver, message, and a medium. In order for a communication to be successful, it is important that the sender is able to correctly convey the message and the receiver should decode it efficiently. It may be one way or two way. In one way communication, the message just had to be send to the receiver, while in two way communication, the message needs to be responded by the receiver. There are several forms of communication, out of which demonstrative communication has great importance since a lot of communication is non-verbal.

Demonstrative Communication

Demonstrative communication, also known as non-verbal communication is a form of communication whereby the sender communicated using non-verbal cues such as body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, etc. this form of communication can be effective at times but can lead to gaps in the communication (Maher, 2005).

Facial expressions are the most common form of demonstrative communication. Facial expressions can sometimes by difficult for people to understand but at various instances is the most important communication tool since certain messages require facial communication. For example, a person might to communicating verbally to someone but needs to convey another message to someone else. In this case, facial expression is the best method of communication. Expressions such as a smile, frown, nod, or wink are very common in communication. However, non-verbal communication can be taken negatively by some receivers. For example a smile may be taken positively by most people but depending on the situation, some people may consider the person smiling as arrogant. The interpretation of the message can affect the effectiveness of the message and in order to correctly communicate the message, the sender has to be considerate about his expressions (Krizan, 2011).

Another form of demonstrative communication is body language. Body language is important during communication that involves interaction. Sometimes we may want to say something but our body language portrays something else. Such cases can lead to negative perceptions about the sender or the receiver interpreting the information in a way not desired by the sender. Crossing ones arms, leaning on the wall, or constant eye movement’s, signals lack of confidence or a display of attitude. Therefore, during conversations it is important to maintain constant eye contact with the audience since it signals confidence. It is also important for the receiver to maintain a good body language during conversations so that the sender is not distracted or get a feeling that the receiver is not interested.

The tone of the voice is another factor that affects the delivery of a message. The conversation can be considered pleasant or non-pleasant by the tone and quality of the voice. Me, As an Interpersonal Communicator

Introduction

Aside from oxygen, food, and water and various other practical needs, communication with human around us is considered as an essential tool for well being of humans. All of us are constantly in communication situations such as at home, at work, on the street, in public transport, with the closest and most strangers. To live, people are forced to interact (Bernstein, 2010). There are various types of communication styles that allow us to create and build relationships with people around us. Effective communication is the basis on how we define ourselves through self esteem and self image. Interpersonal communication is the effective form of communication that takes between two people. In interpersonal communication two people communicate with each other using symbols or words (Adler, 2012). The effectiveness of this communication depends on the familiarity of experience, background, and knowledge of the people involved in the communication. People with common experiences, backgrounds, and beliefs are likely to have better and effective communication. However, an interpersonal communication skill plays an important role in the process of communication. Interpersonal communication is considered extremely relevant for achieving professional and personal success. In this paper I am going to share my experience as interpersonal communicator.

Thesis Statement

Interpersonal communication is plays an important role in building personal and professional relationships.

There is a direct relationship between the quality of communication and quality of life of a person (Koprowska, 2008). Same was the case with me. My personal and professional life was affected because of my interpersonal communication. In my personal life I was passive, reserved, I preferred peace and harmony, did not life to interact much with people. But the type of environment and culture I was living I was expected to be inspiring influencing, open, interested in people. Because of different in the way of thinking and living I was not able to effectively communicate with people around me which highly affective my relationship with various important people in my personal and professional life.

My self esteem went down I was not able to give effective performance at home as well at workplace which increased stress and my career path was also being effective. I had confusing style of interpersonal communication. My messages clearly lead to confusion. When I was forced to resign from my job because of not being effective interpersonal communicator, I decided work on my skills to become effective interpersonal communicator. Initially I started to work on my non verbal communication my tone or volume of the voice used to be very low which made it difficult for others to understand my message so I slowly taken my tone and volume to the voice to the level that can be understandable by all. Then I worked on verbal messages. As a teacher I injected empathy in my communication which helped me to communicate with concern and care. The term intellectual awareness is a broader context of self-awareness. It is defined as “the capacity of individual mind to assess and reason different phenomena through objective and rationale process, as well as, being conscious of the process”. Intellectual awareness is a high-graded from of self awareness pertaining to the objectivity of reasoning faculty, as well as, conscious knowledge about it. Communication pertains to exchange of information between two individuals through a medium. Intellectual awareness has a direct connection with communication. The paradigm of communication is highly affected by intellectual communication. The level of communication for an individual, broadly speaking for a society; highly depends upon level of intellectual awareness for the individual. Culture pertains to commonly attained believes, attributes, norms, and intellectual development attained through a group of people, whereas, communication pertains to exchange of information and believes through interaction of individuals in a society (Maude, 2011).

The paper discusses the concept of intellectual awareness and communication, as well as, their significance in terms of societal context. The paper further discusses the connection between intellectual awareness and communication. The paper signifies the concept of intellectual awareness and its effects on communication, as well as, the process of creating intellectual awareness on societal level through communication. The paper studies the concept of intellectual awareness, as well as, communication in relation to intellectual awareness in a society. It attempts to look into the change in societal context with enhanced intellectual awareness created trough communication. It looks into the effect of enhanced communication in a society. It justifies the premise through enumerating several personal experiences.

Communication and society

The flow of communication actually emerges as the ‘shared living’. The societal paradigm of shared living, as well as, achieving enhanced quality of livelihood; highly rests upon the flow of communication. It is the channel that endorses societal growth in a uniform dimension of progress and development. It leads society towards evolution and innovation, as well as, eradication of stagnancy from a society (Roy et al, 2012). In a societal context, the importance of communication is discussed as under;

Foundation of human form: the foundation of human existence is based upon sharing and interaction, as well as, sharing the thought process. In a society, human existence is revived through communicating knowledge and information acquired by the individual.

Human expression: communication is the only form of human expression in the universe. Human beings communicate through several modes of communication. Human express their learned experiences, as well as, their tendency towards development and newness through communication.
