Abstract

This research paper has been formulated after interviewing the Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO) of an organziation. This reserch paper aims to provide an introduction of IT lifecycle management, and different approaches of IT lifecycle management. These IT lifecycle approaches include Data Lifecycle Management (DLM); Information Lifecycle Management (ILM); and Total Lifecycle Management (TLN). These approaches are a prerequisite for successful IT governance. These are a vital component of a good corporate conduct. These different approaches of IT lifecycle ensure that smooth flow of intact IT activities throughout an organization. The IT lifecycle approaches discussed in this research paper encompasses each single operation regarding the creation, classification, development, deployment, storage, distribution, and final disposal of data and information (Ariyachandra, 2008).

Compare and Contrast Data Life Cycles

Introduction

Data Life Cycle is an overall flow of data in an information system. The data lifecycle comprises of four main activities: data gathering, data processing, data analysis, and data dissemination and storing. In a general Data Life Cycle, the accurate and relevant data is gathered, the data is processed to form databases. The data is extracted for analysis, after being processed. Tools and techniques are applied to enable clients to communicate efficiently using the data (Raub et. al, 2007) (Ariyachandra, 2008).

Different approaches of IT Life Cycle are employed to triumph over the requirements for integration, organization and management of data, information, contents, and storage resources. The most commonly applied approaches are Data Lifecycle Management (DLM); Information Lifecycle Management (ILM); and Total Lifecycle Management (TLN) (Raub et. al, 2007).

There three approaches of IT Life cycle we are going to discuss and compare in this research paper are Data Lifecycle Management (DLM); Information Lifecycle Management (ILM); and Total Lifecycle Management (TLN).

 

Data Lifecycle Management (DLM)

Data Lifecycle Management (DLM) may be defined as “the management of data of an organization throughout its lifecycle from its creation or origination to its dissemination on various storage resources and other hardware media, within the limits of that organization.” One of the most significant assets of a company is 'data'. The data lifecycle management approach is applied to guarantee that the data is disseminated properly across the various hardware resources for storage of data. DLM is an umbrella activity under the overall information management of an enterprise. The data lifecycle management approach ensures the appropriate and secured routing of data with the optimum levels of availability, security, accessibility, immutability, longevity, authentication, authorization, integrity, performance, and cost. Applying the DLM strategy provides the capability to integrate multiple tiers regarding performance, availability, storage volume, and cost issues into a solely and highly scalable machine. The DLM approach reduces the costs, management complexities, and processes synchronization and concurrency issues. It supports the capability of pooling across various levels and processes (Ariyachandra et. al, 2008) (Hammond, 2006).
