Introduction

Corporal punishments such as caning are still present in some parts of the world. In 2009, former American footballer Kamari Charlton was sentenced to caning in Singapore. The former football star was arrested for continuing to stay in Singapore despite the fact that his 90 day visa had expired. Kamari, in his defence, said that he couldn't leave Singapore on time since her wife was having some pregnancy complications due to which she was undergoing surgery.
