Correctional Facilities

Introduction

This paper intends to compare and contrast single sex detention facility and coed detention facilities. This paper will provide a well reasoned discussion about the comparisons and contrasts between the two types of juvenile programs or correctional methods. Juvenile facilities always remain critical and people believe there are less efforts being taken from the part of government to provide effective juvenile facilities to the criminals. Therefore, juvenile corrections are always encouraged. I have found the issue of single sex detention and coed detention facilities significantly important because the youth offenders are essentially being directly impacted with the two different types of juvenile facilities. For instance, coed juvenile detention center has high number of rapes or sexual molestation allegations. The purpose of this paper is to make the readers aware about important aspects associated with single sex detention facility and coed detention facilities.

Single Sex Detention

As suggested by the name; single sex detention facilities either cater men or women prisoners at a time. With the passage of time; there has been an increase witnessed in girls being a growing population in the juvenile justice system. In any age; males and females both have different needs and requirements to be catered. Therefore; single sex detention facilities are designed in accordance with the unique needs of male and female prisoners (Bosworth, 2005).

Male and female prisoners both interface with a similar system of justice. Therefore; the increase in coed correctional facilities has been witnessed. However, relevant authorities must not forego the aspect that gender responsive changes and accommodations need to be made while focusing over the creation of coed correctional facilities whereas single sex detention facilities do not need any such accommodations. If relevant accommodations are not made within the correctional facilities; this underlying coed correctional facilities will lose its meanings.

The single sex detention facilities are designed to properly fulfill and cater the needs of males and females both respectively. Therefore; within prisoners, single sex detention systems are more popular than coed correctional facilities. There are many reasons behind the choice. For instance, coed correctional facilities are not created with an attempt to confront the developmental, mental health and life experiences of girls (Stinchcomb, 2011).

Coed Detention Facilities

Coed correctional facilities on the other hand manage women and men under single premises within the management of single administration. There are different rules and guidelines developed by every juvenile facility. For instance; some restricts the interaction between both the sexes whereas some facilitates direct communication between the two genders.

The coed correctional facilities are also known as coed institutions. The concept of coed correctional facilities was introduced in United States if America as it considers that male and female prisoners must be treated equally. Initially; there were a very small number of women offenders who used to be kept with men. With the passage of time; all correctional facilities discouraged being segregated on the basis of gender.
