Counselor professional identity has been identified, in general, as the sum of existing professional counselor knowledge. However, specific to individual counselor identity, Beale (2003) suggested that “… if the individual is building an authentic professional identity… personalization is occurring” (p. 71). In the process of developing portfolios, counselors concretely examine their professional identity by identifying and categorizing demonstrated skills and competencies.
