Introduction

The Huntsville Police Department carried out a crime investigation which exposed a rise in criminal incidents regarding juveniles in the public school and jurisdiction system. Thus, the Huntsville Police Department in the year 1995 got a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice which accepted a cooperative endeavor between more than a few non-law enforcement organizations and agencies to build up a strategy which deals with this issue. In this regard, there are a number of juvenile prevention programs operating in Huntsville Alabama. However, in this paper we will compare two most prominent juvenile prevention programs in Huntsville Alabama including their goals, objectives and services.

Youth Services Program

The Youth Services Program is an outcome of the combined efforts of the police department and the U.S. Department of Justice which was initiated in the ending months of 1995. This program was initiated as a multi agency method to the many-sided and complex problems of juvenile crime. The accomplishment of the program is dependent on the formation of interactive and strong affiliations between individual components of the non-law enforcement agencies, criminal justice system, and the community-at-large.

All involved entities were capable of identifying common issues and work out joint solutions that count on collective partaking. The plan was to develop these relationships and employ them as a foundation for the successful execution of the Youth Services Program.

Major Goals of the Program

Plan, implement, and keep up an interactive and effective partnership in the Educational and Policing Systems.

Make more literate, responsible, well-rounded citizens by means of collective involvement.

Enhance relationships and improve partaking between the following: Huntsville City School System, The City of Huntsville, School Security, Huntsville Police Department, Students, Teachers, Parents and Social Service Agencies.

Enhance the standard of education in the Huntsville City Schools by means of the following ways: early intervention, proactive approach, prevention prior to reaction, keen parent participation, augmented community involvement, business community's support and enhanced student perceptions.

Trim down expulsions, criminal incidents, key disciplinary actions, negative perceptions and disciplinary intrusion in the educational procedure in the school system.

Objectives of the Program

Train the school security, Youth Services Officers, administrators, students and parents.

Set up a Crisis Intervention Team which would take account of representatives from police officers, school system personnel, parents, social service agencies, family court system, prosecutors, business community and the civic organizations.
