Introduction

In order to complete the assignment of critical infrastructural protections, I have selected the critical structural vulnerabilities and protection due to hurricanes in the United States. Although the United States has always been prone to natural disasters and calamities, especially hurricanes and floods, but the recent changes in the climate and global warming has further increased the risk of natural disasters in these region and is claiming a number of lives each year. It is eminent to mention here that with the increased risk of disasters, the precautionary measures have also been increased and a number of researches have been conducted to access the vulnerabilities and the infrastructural protections. The following paragraphs would highlight and focus on the vulnerabilities of these areas and the issues that nigh arise as a result of these vulnerabilities and risks.

Discussion

Basically, a hurricane is a form of tropical cyclone and extreme storm, which emerges from the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, the eastern Pacific Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico. These are known for causing catastrophic destructions and damage to the areas that it hit and thus requires considerable and adequate precautionary measures by the government and the state. The rate of repetition of hurricanes in the United States has called upon the state to take precautionary measures before the situation worsens, with 1- 2 natural disasters hitting each year, and also work on the development of better infrastructure that can tolerate the impact of these hurricanes (US department of homeland security, 2012).

In order to state the topic clearly and succinctly, it can be stated that the US region is extremely vulnerable to Hurricanes in terms of its transportation and electricity infrastructure, thus affecting the life as well as commutation of the citizens in case of any disaster. The most interesting and revealing points of the topic deal with the issues of infrastructure, and also throw light on the need and requirement for building better protected and developed subways, tunnels as well as the low-lying roads and the power sub-stations. In addition, the storms produced in the higher sea waters that might come up in future also pose serious risk and threat to the infrastructure of the Unites States and certain areas of the states have been rendered non-functional for weeks after getting hit by the hurricanes in the past.

The idea presented above highlight the important infrastructural vulnerabilities and also shed light on the need of getting specialized and developed tunnels and subways, so that the requirement for having better and secure electricity supply system. In the past few years, more than 2.5 million of the individuals have been affected by these natural disasters, and the same has led a large number of others to bankruptcy.

Thus, these measures are not only linked to the well being of the citizens but also have direct relation with the need to having better and developed in order to ensure that the citizens succeed in getting maximum benefit of the facilities ...
