Psychological Effects

On psychological level, low doses of alcohol produces the sensation of elevating mood and relax the person. Physically, a little alcohol increases heart rate, dilates blood vessels, irritates the gastrointestinal system, and stimulates the secretion of gastric juices and urine output. Heavy doses alter speech, balance, vision and hearing. Alcohol consumption develops a feeling of euphoria and fine motor coordination is lost, so it is forbidden to drive a car and it is very dangerous to work with any type of machinery because lack of coordination in physical activities could lead to fatal injuries. At high doses, the above symptoms are intensified and mental judgments are altered as a result the brain doesn't identify the objects. If the individual continues to drink he/she comes to a loss of motor control that needs help in order to move and there is an obvious confusion. Alcohol over dosage could result in severe poisoning and the continuous consumption of the limits could result in severe poisoning leading to coma and then eventually death. The reason for this fatal behavior is the depression of respiratory system (Martin et al, 1995).

Physical Effects

In cumulative terms, immoderate consumption irritates the stomach and causes gastritis, damages the heart to cause heart rhythm disturbances and even heart failure, also damages the liver, whose result is known as cirrhosis, a disease caused by the loss of liver cells which reduces bile production. This generates symptoms such as indigestion, weight loss, constipation, etc.. In regard to the nervous system, the abuse of this drug can cause serious mental disorders such as memory loss, learning impairment, inflammation of the nerves, and even called Korsakoff syndrome, a psychotic state characterized by loss of reality (when the box bind chronic malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies). Finally, as is widely known, alcohol addiction causes physical and psychological dependence (Faden, & Goldman, 2005).
