EFFECTS OF MICROWAVED FOODS

Effects of Microwaved Foods

Thousands of people sacrifice their health in replace of the ease of the microwave. Above ninety percent of American people has a microwave oven in their home for the preparation of meals. Since the microwave is so easy handling and it also saves energy as compared to conventional ovens. Normally, humans think that whatever a microwave does to cook foods, it does not create any negative impact on the food. It is understandable that if the microwave was harmful actually, the authorities would never have allowed it n the market (Yang, 2002).

The reason of this paper is to prove, that cooking through microwave is not normal or safe, and could be more harmful to the body than any person expected. On the other hand, manufacturers of microwave, politicians and basic nature of people, restrain the evidence and facts. For that reason, people are still cooking with microwave, without knowing the dangers and effects of what they do (Watanabe, 2008).

How does a microwave effect on your health?

Microwave is a form of electromagnetic energy like radio or light waves and a portion of the electromagnetic range of energy. In this advanced age of technology, microwaves are used for television, telephone and computers through the space or through a satellite signal. However, it is more recognizable as the resource of cooking food. Each of the microwaves contains a magnetron, i.e. a tube in which electrons are affected by electric and magnetic fields in such a way that it produced radiation of about 2450 megahertz or 2.45 Gigahertz (Strauss 2003). This radiation of microwave interacts with molecules in the food.

No official study by the government or the Food and Drugs Administration has proven that the current use of the microwave is harmful, but we all know that the validity of the studies is often very limited. Many of these studies over time indicate that they are incorrect. As consumers, we have assumed a degree of common sense in making assumptions (Stedham, 2007).

Microwaves are not safe for children's milk

Though food heats quickly in microwave, it is not suggested to heat milk and water bottles of babies. Bottles may feel cool while touching but the water in it might become really hot and may burn the throat and mouth of baby.

The formation of vapor in the closed bottle can also cause it to burst out. Heating the bottle in the microwave can have minor changes in the milk. According to formulas, it might be a loss of few vitamins. In the case of milk, some properties of the vitamins can be vanished. Keeping the warm bottle in running hot water in a pan before feeding the baby might take few minutes, but it is safer than using microwave (O'Connor, 2006).
