Abstract

The core idea of this paper is to discuss and point out those particular factors of pleading insanity that effect on society. Pleading insanity is always disliked by people having healthy mentality. The irresistible depressing responses from society for pleading defense deserve academic awareness. The primary assumption in the mind of healthy people is that most of the criminals take negative advantage of pleading insanity laws. In past studies researchers have associated more than a few attitudinal and demographic Variables for society support for pleading insanity. The present study is designed to find out the level of effect that pleading insanity put on society. We will also explore society support for defendants of pleading insanity.

Introduction

The massive argument of society support for pleading insanity has lead many researchers to study and this controversial topic. When John Hinckley appeared as the verdict of President Reagan shooting the society response was that insanity pleading actually is an excuse for the verdict. They think that pleading insanity allows several blameworthy people walk off free of charge. Past studies imply that this pessimistic impact from society in not only in Unites states but also in other regions. Usually when a person commits a crime it is supposed that he will be charged and held responsible for the crime (Wheatman et al, 2001). However in some cases pleading insanity appears and it may provide a loophole for the verdict to walk free without facing any charge and such results cause society hatred for pleading insanity.

In Insanity pleading cases there are very minor chances that a victim will walk out without facing any charge because usually public representatives i.e. Juries avoid being sympathetic to defendants. There is always a significant doubt and distrust for the defendants of insanity plea. The jurors in the case of John Hinckley in their demonstration had spoken disappointment with the officially permitted set of laws leading the plea for defendants of pleading insanity (Erickson, 2001).

Research methodology

A survey was conducted by cellular phone using unsystematic digit dialing methods. Overall 330 respondents were contacted within USA of age 18 or above. Similarly data for Demographic variables such as age, gender, race, education, income and protestant were collected from respondents. Interviews were conducted on weekdays from students of different studies online or through cell phones. Universal Questions on the subject of societal attitudes were incorporated on the questionnaire. Respondents were asked to acknowledge about the level of their agreement through six substances from the Authoritarianism scale of Altemeyer's Right wing.
