Discussion

Basic science research in conjunction with creativity and entrepreneurship has led to the boom in technology and standard of living over the past century in the developed world. These scientific breakthroughs have had wide ranging impacts on a variety of technologies from construction, automobiles, and aircraft, to telecommunications, medicine, and computation. Society has continuously tried to use its collective intelligence to further our understanding of the world around us on both macroscopic and microscopic levels to understand nature, even if the application is not immediate. While our society has many challenges that warrant considerable attention, two of the most profound are: the ability to discover or create abundant, cheap, and sustainable sources of energy and ways to execute computation with devices that become increasingly miniaturized. The increase in the standard of living that mankind has benefited from since the dawn of the industrial revolution is largely due to the availability of cheap and abundant energy. Currently much of the world's economy is dependent on a sustainable source of cheap and abundant energy. While fossil fuels have been the major source of energy over the past few centuries, they are a finite resource, and concerns exist about the environmental impact of fossil fuels from mining the naturally occurring deposits in the ground, to their transport and consumption. While the most commonly thought of environmental concern is the production of carbon dioxide and the impact that may have on the world's climate, there are other environmental concerns, such as incomplete combustion that leads to soot and smog, which affect air quality typically in densely populated areas. In addition to environmental concerns it is predicted that ...
