Introduction

Execution of the 3rd May or the Shootings of May 3rd is a painting by Spanish painter Francisco de Goya. The box, about 2.68 x 3.47 meters, was made ??in 1814 and is located in a museum in Madrid. In the painting, The Shootings of May 3rd one can see the song of freedom and independence of the Spanish people. It also portrays a great argument against war, against all wars and the horror, death and misery associated with it..

The type of painting is an oil on canvas where by Goya has used the play of light and shadow to highlight the drama of the situation. The only artificial light comes from the bluff situated between those who are to be shot, and illuminating, and the firing squad, the dark, i.e. axis makes dividing line between heroes and villains.

Goya's intention to produce Execution of Third of May was to translate the Spanish people's struggle against French domination under the Lifting of May 2 at the beginning of the Spanish War of Independence . Her partner is the May 2, 1808 in Madrid , also called the charge of the Mamluks.

Both pictures are from the same era and artistic movement.  Goya suggested the commissioning of these large paintings to the regency liberal Archbishop of Toledo and Seville , before the arrival of King Fernando VII .  The painting is dark, shows strong images and creates the archetype of the horror in Spanish painting that Goya took at that time for his etchings titled the disaster at war.
