Abstract

Extensive research has been conducted on the causes and driving forces of the financial crisis of 2007-2008. The research paper is an attempt to investigate the relationship between fair value and the crisis and to find a reliable answer to the research question. In the light of exploratory and qualitative research approach, the researcher conducted comprehensive assessment of the prior literature studies in an attempt to explore the degree of influence fair value had on the crisis. In addition to this, in-depth analysis of AIG and insurance sector's role in the crisis helped to infer that fair value exacerbated the crisis. The notion was supported by the analysis of selected financial aspects of AIG and its management decisions pertaining to overall investment portfolio management. In the lead of research findings, the researcher identified areas for further study and intellectual development in this discipline.
