Introduction

Free will may be defined as the power to perform free actions. But what does 'free action' mean? Traditional philosophical answers fall into two groups: compatibilist and incompatibilist. Compatibilism and incompatibilism are positions on the relationship between free action and determinism. Determinism is the thesis that the combination of a complete statement of the laws of nature and a complete description of the condition of the entire universe at any point in time logically entails a complete description of the condition of the entire universe at any other point in time (Mele, 2009).
