Gender Inequality in Latin America
Gender inequality is related to the gender roles can still be observed in this contemporary society around us in more than one ways. The people of Latin America claims that the society has moved ahead and adopted the belief of equality of men and women in our society, outdated ideas about the gender related roles still exists in our society. Moreover, social discrimination in Latin America involves a number of grounds. In Latin America, gender discrimination can be done in health sector, gender discrimination can be done in workplace settings, gender discrimination can be done in the field of television and media, gender discrimination can be done in the field of education. Hence, there are scores of ways through which gender discrimination can be taken place.
While inequality does vary over time, between groups, and among regions, it appears well entrenched. It is ubiquitous in Latin America impinging upon the poor, women, racial minorities, immigrants, homosexuals, and non-Christians, who are to say, a majority of the population. Its many forms create numerous disparities in income, education, occupation, mental and physical health, and housing. In short, inequality significantly affects life chances. Those not negatively affected, however, may experience these various inequalities differently.
For some, inequality may not be evident having been rationalized, normalized, reutilized, and obfuscated, and they may find their seemingly egalitarian society acceptable. Other may realize the extent of inequality, but are content believing it has diminished. Perhaps still others, sensing they benefit from inequality, prefer to ignore it. On the other hand, those negatively affected do not have the option of becoming inured to inequality's presence, as they must contend with it regularly. Whether hidden or evident, the vast system of social structures, belief systems and behaviors underpinning inequality does not exist without effort to maintain and sustain it.
Discrimination is a sensitive subject that is applicable to every citizen. Despite the measures taken to eliminate discrimination and bias, both are unfortunately part of human nature. The current laws that exist now are able to decrease the different types of discrimination that may arise, yet as time goes on, new forms of discrimination will undoubtedly arise.
